Ask ten people whether you should buy a Chevy Express 2500 or a 3500 for a camper van, and you'll probably hear the same answer over and over.

"Get the 3500."

On paper, it's easy to understand why. A higher payload rating sounds like the smarter long-term investment, especially when camper builds have a habit of getting heavier over time. More capacity must mean a better camper, right?

Not necessarily.

We've worked with customers who spent months hunting for a 3500 because they were convinced anything less would be a mistake. We've also worked with owners who bought a clean 2500, built exactly the camper they envisioned, and never came close to exceeding the van's capabilities. On the other side of the coin, we've seen lightweight weekend builds slowly evolve into fully equipped adventure rigs with larger battery systems, additional water storage, roof racks, steel bumpers, recovery gear, and enough equipment to completely change how the van drives.

That's why this decision has very little to do with the number on the badge.

The better question isn't, "Which chassis is best?"

It's, "Which chassis is best for the camper I'm actually building?"

The Chevy Express has quietly become one of the most dependable camper platforms on the road. It's mechanically simple, parts are readily available almost anywhere in the country, and decades of production mean there are still plenty of good examples on the used market. Whether you're converting one into a simple weekend camper or building something capable of disappearing into the mountains for weeks at a time, both the 2500 and the 3500 can be excellent foundations.

The trick is understanding where they're different, where they're surprisingly similar, and why the right answer depends far more on your finished build than internet advice.



Quick Answer

A Chevy Express 2500 is often the right choice for lighter camper builds, moderate electrical systems, sensible water storage, and owners who don't expect to carry substantial permanent weight or tow heavy trailers on a regular basis.

A Chevy Express 3500 usually makes more sense when the finished camper will include larger battery banks, significant cabinetry, steel bumpers, roof-mounted equipment, hitch carriers, additional water capacity, or frequent towing while fully loaded.

Neither chassis is automatically better.

Then buy the best-condition van that supports those plans.

Build for the Camper You'll Own

Most camper vans don't stay the way they're originally planned.

The sketch on the garage wall usually starts with a bed, some basic storage, and enough room to throw a cooler in the back. Then the ideas start coming. Solar panels make sense. A larger battery bank sounds nice. An awning would be useful. Bigger tires would help on forest roads. Before long, you've added water storage, recovery equipment, roof racks, cabinetry, a refrigerator, and enough camping gear to stay off the grid for days at a time.

Individually, none of those upgrades seem particularly significant. Together, they transform the van.

That's why we encourage customers to think about the finished camper instead of the empty cargo van they're buying today. Choosing a chassis that comfortably supports your long-term plans usually leads to a better driving experience and reduces the chances of finding yourself shopping for suspension upgrades simply because the build grew beyond what you originally expected.



Why Payload Matters More Than Horsepower

Horsepower sells vehicles.

Payload determines how well they perform as campers.

One of the first specifications we look at is Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) because it establishes the maximum total weight the van is engineered to have when fully loaded. That number includes the van itself along with passengers, fuel, water, cabinetry, batteries, camping gear, and every permanent accessory that's been added over the years.

Payload is the amount of that rating that's still available after accounting for the weight of the vehicle itself.

Understanding the difference is important because camper vans don't carry temporary cargo the way a delivery van might. Their weight becomes part of the vehicle every day. Cabinets don't come back out after the weekend. Water tanks stay full. Batteries, bumpers, refrigerators, and recovery gear become permanent passengers that the suspension supports mile after mile.

That's why the conversation almost always starts with weight instead of horsepower. A well-matched chassis doesn't just stay within its ratings—it gives the suspension the opportunity to do the job it was designed to do.



Body Length Matters More Than Most Buyers Realize

One advantage of the Chevy Express platform is the number of configurations available on the used market. Buyers aren't just choosing between a 2500 and a 3500—they're often deciding between a standard body and an extended body at the same time.

For a camper conversion, that's a bigger decision than many people realize.

An extended van gives you more room to work with. It makes fitting a permanent bed, larger galley, additional storage, and a more comfortable living space much easier without every inch of the interior feeling like a compromise. It's one of the reasons extended-body Express vans are so popular for camper builds.

That extra space comes with a tradeoff, though.

More storage almost always becomes more gear. Empty cabinets fill up. The rear garage starts carrying recovery equipment, tools, leveling blocks, camp chairs, and spare parts. Before long, the extra room you appreciated while designing the build has quietly become additional permanent weight.

That's why we encourage people to think about body length and chassis choice together. A standard-wheelbase 2500 used for weekend trips has very different needs than an extended 3500 that's expected to spend weeks at a time exploring backroads.



Buying Used Changes the Conversation

Unlike newer platforms, many Chevy Express owners are shopping the used market rather than ordering a new cargo van.

That changes the priorities.

A clean, well-maintained 2500 with documented service history is often a smarter purchase than a neglected 3500 that spent fifteen years hauling heavy commercial loads. Rust, accident history, maintenance records, and overall condition have a much bigger impact on ownership than the badge on the fender.

We've seen buyers become so focused on finding a 3500 that they passed on excellent 2500s, only to end up with a van that immediately needed suspension work, steering components, brakes, or cooling system repairs.

The better approach is to find the cleanest van that honestly supports your finished build. A well-cared-for platform gives you a much better starting point than chasing capacity you may never actually need.



Towing Is About More Than the Trailer

Many camper vans eventually end up towing something.

For some owners it's a small cargo trailer with motorcycles. Others pull side-by-sides, raft trailers, small boats, or another vehicle behind the van. Whatever you're towing, it's important to understand that towing capacity and payload aren't the same thing.

The trailer carries most of its own weight, but the tongue weight pressing down on the hitch becomes part of the load your van is carrying. Add passengers, water, camping equipment, batteries, and a hitch-mounted bike rack or storage box, and the available payload begins shrinking much faster than most people expect.

That's why a van can technically be rated to tow a certain amount while still being overloaded once the camper itself is fully equipped.

Looking at towing capacity by itself doesn't tell the whole story. The complete vehicle—the camper, the passengers, the trailer, and everything packed for the trip—is what determines how the van will perform on the road.



Ride Quality Changes as the Build Evolves

One question comes up in almost every chassis comparison:

Which one rides better?

The honest answer is that an empty test drive tells you very little about how either van will feel after a camper conversion.

A lightly loaded Express 2500 will generally ride a little softer because its suspension was designed around lighter working loads. An unloaded 3500 can feel firmer simply because it's engineered to support additional weight.

Once a camper conversion is complete, that comparison often changes.

A properly loaded 3500 begins operating much closer to the range it was designed for, while a heavily equipped 2500 has less room before permanent weight starts affecting ride height, body control, and overall stability. That doesn't automatically mean the 2500 was the wrong choice. It simply means every chassis performs best when it's carrying the kind of load it was engineered to support.

Comparing empty vans is easy.

Comparing finished campers is what actually matters.



Suspension Should Match the Build—Not the Badge

This is where we probably differ from a lot of companies selling suspension parts online.

We don't believe every Chevy Express should receive the same lift kit or spring package simply because it wears the same badge.

Two customers can both own Express 3500s and require completely different suspension setups. One might have a lightweight camper that spends most of its time exploring Forest Service roads in Colorado. Another may have steel bumpers, a winch, oversized tires, forty gallons of water, roof-mounted gear, a motorcycle carrier, and enough lithium batteries to power an off-grid cabin.

They're driving the same chassis.

They shouldn't be driving the same suspension.

Before recommending parts, we want to understand the complete vehicle. Is it 2WD or AWD? Standard body or extended? Cargo van, passenger van, or a cutaway conversion? How much does it weigh today? What tire size are you running? How do you actually use it?

Those answers tell us far more than the badge on the door ever will.

The goal isn't simply adding lift or making room for larger tires. It's building a van that feels composed on the highway, stable in crosswinds, predictable on rough roads, and enjoyable to drive whether you're headed across town or across the country.

So Which One Would We Buy?

Imagine two Chevy Express vans parked next to each other.

The first belongs to a couple who disappear into the mountains a few weekends each month. Their build is intentionally simple: a comfortable bed, a modest electrical system, a refrigerator, enough water for a long weekend, and storage for bikes and camping gear. They value reliability, good road manners, and a layout that doesn't carry any more weight than necessary.

The second owner has a different vision. Their Express is becoming an overland-style camper with permanent cabinetry, a large lithium battery bank, substantial water storage, steel bumpers, roof-mounted accessories, recovery equipment, oversized tires, and a trailer that regularly comes along for the trip.

Both are building excellent campers.

We probably wouldn't recommend the same chassis to both.

For the first build, we'd have no hesitation recommending a clean Express 2500 that provides enough verified payload for the finished vehicle. It can be a fantastic platform when the build stays within the chassis' intended operating range, and the money saved finding the right 2500 can often be invested in quality suspension, better tires, or other upgrades that improve the ownership experience.

For the second build, we'd usually start the conversation around a 3500. As permanent equipment accumulates, the additional capacity gives the owner more flexibility without constantly wondering how close they're getting to the vehicle's limits.

Even then, we'd verify the individual van before making a recommendation. Two Express vans wearing the same badge can have different ratings depending on the model year, drivetrain, body length, engine, and factory equipment.

That's why we don't believe there's a universal answer.

There's only the right answer for your build.



Don't Guess—Know What Your Van Weighs

If there's one piece of advice we give more than almost any other, it's this:

Weigh the van.

We've had customers confidently describe their camper as "pretty lightweight," only to discover it was carrying several hundred pounds more than they expected. Water, batteries, larger tires, recovery gear, tools, camping equipment, hitch accessories, and everyday supplies add up much faster than most people realize.

Knowing your front axle, rear axle, and total vehicle weight tells you far more than estimates ever will. It confirms where you stand relative to your vehicle's ratings and gives us the information we need to recommend springs and suspension components that actually fit your camper.

That's why we often ask for a CAT Scale weight before recommending suspension.

It's one of the simplest things you can do to make sure your van performs the way it should.



Your VIN Doesn't Tell the Whole Story

We can learn a lot from your VIN.

We can see how the van left the factory.

What we can't see is everything that's happened since.

Your VIN doesn't know you've installed steel bumpers, a winch, roof racks, larger tires, forty gallons of water, a motorcycle carrier, full cabinetry, or hundreds of pounds of camping equipment. It doesn't know whether the van spends its weekends on washboard forest roads or thousands of interstate miles every summer.

Those details matter far more than most people realize.

That's why we ask questions before recommending suspension. We want to understand how you travel, what permanent equipment the van carries, where you like to camp, and how you expect the build to evolve over the next few years.

Our goal isn't to sell the same suspension package to every Express owner.

The Chevy Express 2500 and 3500 have both earned their place as dependable camper van platforms because they're built to do slightly different jobs.

If your conversion is relatively light and you have enough verified payload for the finished build, a 2500 can be an outstanding choice that delivers years of dependable travel. If you're planning a heavier camper with substantial permanent equipment, frequent towing, or plenty of room for future upgrades, a 3500 is often the better foundation.
